Description: Project Haiti is a humanitarian and educational program conceived by several international oriented medical students at the University of Florida College of Medicine since 1996. Through the project, US medical students travel to several Haitian cities during Spring Break and reach out to needy Haitians by:setting up temporary clinics, bring desperately needed medicine and supplies to distribute, visit orphanages to vaccinate children, and provide health education about nutrition and STD prevention.

Description: The primary mission of FAdHiEd is to develop a community college system in Haiti. Toward this end, the foundation has (a) determined the level of satisfaction with Haiti's current educational system among high school junior and senior students, (b) determined the level of satisfaction with Haiti's current educational system among business and industry owners and professionals, and (c) proposed a design for a community college system that would serve a long-range plan in the different regions of the country. The efforts to establish a community college system is modeled after the open-access community college system that has been established in the state of Florida. Description: ORE is working to improve environmental, agricultural and economic conditions in rural Haiti. Our development projects involve high revenue tree crops, improved seeds, cash crops and marketing programs. Working directly with farmers, we are able to provide practical solutions to deforestation and subsistence farming. We offer commercial quality plant materials and the technical assistance needed for successful production and marketing.

The development projects in Haiti are to increase farmer income, produce nutritionally enhanced food, and to improve the environment with commercial fruit trees. Practical agricultural training and hands-on technical assistance are essential means to achieve these goals. The three core development projects we have developed to achieve these goals are improved seeds, high value tree crops, and vegetable and tuber crops.

ORE is also involved in variety of activities designed to improve the quality of life in rural Haiti. These include protection of drinking water systems, promoting schools and low cost housing projects in areas threatened by environmental degradation.

Description: Janet A. Sanderson was confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to Haiti by the U.S. Senate on February 16, 2006. Ambassador Sanderson, a member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor, recently served as U.S. Ambassador to the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. During her appointment, she worked to build bilateral cooperation with that strategically located country and oversaw the normalization of the U.S. diplomatic presence in light of an improving local political and security environment. Ambassador Sanderson served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Amman, Jordan (1997-2000). An economic officer by training, her other assignments included Economic Minister-Counselor in Cairo (1993-1997), Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Amman, Jordan (1989-1992), and Petroleum Attache in Kuwait (1982-1984). She served as the Agency for International Development Liaison Officer in charge of U.S. assistance programs in the West Bank and Gaza in Tel Aviv (1980-1982), and started her career as Vice-Consul/Economic Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In Washington, Ambassador Sanderson served as the desk officer for Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (1984-86) and subsequently as the desk officer for the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) (1986-1988). Ambassador Sanderson is the recipient of numerous awards including the Department's Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards and the 1996 Herbert A. Salzman Award for International Economic Performance. A resident of Tucson, Arizona, she entered the Foreign Service in December 1977. She graduated from the College of William and Mary with a B.A. in Government and has a M.A. in National Security Studies from the College of Naval Warfare, Newport, RI. Description:Founded jointly in 1994 by Haitians and Americans, the Lambi Fund of Haiti is a unique grassroots organization whose mission is to assist the popular, democratic movement in Haiti. Its goal is to help strengthen civil society in Haiti as a necessary foundation for democracy and development.
The Lambi Fund of Haiti takes its lead from the peasant and women's organizations with which we collaborate. The Lambi Fund is based on the premise that the Haitian people understand how development is best achieved in their country. Therefore, the Lambi Fund follows the lead of grassroots organizations in program and priorities. The Lambi Fund never dictates to a community organization what should be done. Through discussion and reflection, the peasants decide what is best for their community and present the project to the Lambi Fund for support.

Description: To address the immediate needs of the transitional Haitian government and the Haitian population following civil disturbances and a change in political leadership in February and March 2004, the U.S. Government (USG) developed the Haiti Response and Reconstruction Program for $425 million. In FY 2004 and 2005, USAID managed approximately $336.3 million of these resources to support the Interim Government of Haiti (IGOH) to help restore and sustain a climate of peace and security, revitalize its tattered economy, provide essential social services and improve conditions for democratic processes to take place, including free and fair elections held in the beginning of 2006.
A USG contribution of $198.8 million is projected to support the newly elected Government of Haiti (GOH) for FY 2006, of which USAID would manage approximately $156.6 million for the following programs: economic growth and employment generation, institutional support for the newly installed GOH, expansion of health, humanitarian, and educational services; and strengthening democratic institutions particularly the newly elected legislative and local government bodies.
