Makouti Agro-Enterprises is an agricultural business and marketing cooperative established in 2004 to increase food security and farmer and producers incomes. Since its inception, Makouti Agro-Enterprises has worked with Partners of the Americas to increase the capacity of producers through volunteer expertise that have traveled to Haiti under the USAID Farmer-to-Farmer program.
Makouti Agro-Enterprises has been working with Haitian livestock producers to increase the quantity of livestock available in Haiti and to improve nutrition and reproductive health. Goats and livestock in general are important commodities in the Haitian economy and families count on selling livestock to help pay for schools, funerals or other major expenses. When livestock is lost due to poor health or during pregnancy, producers find it difficult to recover economically.
The Haitian American Historical Society will be celebrating the third anniversary of the creation of the Haitian Memorial Monument at Franklin Square in Savannah, Georgia on October 9, 2010. The Haitian Memorial commemorates the Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue, a unit of 700 soldiers made up of free men from Saint-Domingue (the name of Haiti before the Haitian Revolution) and the largest contingency of soldiers of African descent to fight in the Revolutionary War.
